Englis h himself, bu t he coul d no t do so because of his failin g health . Hi
s worl d famous book, The Indian War of Independence, 1857 was translate d int
o Englis h from the origina l Marath i b y his severa l patrio t colleagues, bu
t the final touc h give n t o the boo k was o f the autho r himself. H e wrot e
Hindutva an d Hindu-Pad-Padashahi originall y i n English ,Savarka r wa s a
write r o f great eminence i n Marathi , Beside s the charm o f language ,
there is a strikin g originalit y i n his writings, an d though t is paramount.
Henc e the necessit y o f makin g his wor k availabl e i n othe r languages
arises invariably . Bu t translation , they say, is lik e a faithless mistress.
Th e charm o f the origina l goes. Th e learned •translator, his labour
tempered wit h devotion , has, however, trie d to give his best. Shr i S.T.
