Foreword

The robust development in GST like passing of the 101stConstitutional Amendment (GST) Act, Creation of GST Council and its Secretariat, regular nine meetings of GST Council to discuss various issues relating to GST including broad contours of the GST rate structure, threshold exemption and parameters for composition scheme, details for compensation to States on implementation of GST, examination of draft model GST law, draft IGST law and the Compensation Law and administrative mechanism for GST, all reveals that the much-awaited GST implementation is just a step ahead for spurring growth, competitiveness, indirect tax simplification and greater transparency. Appreciating the increasing changes and complexities taking place in the field of GST and its expected implementation from July 2017, the Indirect Taxes Committee of ICAI has come with the publication named “FAQ and MCQ on Revised Model GST Law”. This novel initiative of the Committee provides a comprehensive coverage of GST in question answer format as an easy & lucid way to understand the law. This would be further updated on passing of the Act and Rules in the near future.We heartily appreciate CA. Madhukar N. Hiregange, Chairman, CA. Preface

The budget estimated revenue of Indirect Taxes of ` 9,31,579 crores out of total tax revenue estimated of the Central Government of `19,11,579 crores in the year 2017-18exhibits that indirect taxation is a pivotal source of revenue of Centre. The States are also collecting more than 4 lakhs crores as VAT which is their main source of revenue. The Goods of and Services Tax (GST), a major taxation reform to be levied on supply of goods and/or services is likely to be passed in this Budget Session of the Parliament after release of Revised Model GST Law by Government on November 26th 2016.Therefore, the need of hour is to embrace the knowledge of professionals like Chartered Accountants. Taking these facts into account, the Indirect Taxes Committee of ICAI has developed “FAQ and MCQ on Revised Model GST Law” with an aim to simplify the understanding of Revised Model GST. A Text Book Of Physics

PREFACE

The preparation of this volume was undertaken to meet a demand that has been growing for some years past for a text-book of Physical Science which should connect more intimately than has hitherto been usual the scientific aspects of Physics with its modem practical applications. The reader must be left to judge how far the authors have succeeded in thus combining the outlooks of the man of science and the engineer. The contents have been selected to meet the requirements of various classes of students: those preparing for Intermediate ana other examinations of Lonaon and other U niversities; and those entering for appointments in the Army, Navy, and Civil Service, or offering themselves for examination in Electrical Engineering (Grade I.) by the City and Guilds of London Institute. The book has been arranged in parts, in accordance with the divisions of the subject found convenient in most schools and colleges. Part I., Dynamics, comprises the sections of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics usually studied, and includes sections on motion, statics, and the properties of fluids. Part II., H eat; Part III., Light; Part IV., Sound; and Part V., Magnetism and Electricity; deal respectively with the principles of these subjects and their applications. Complete courses of laboratory work have been provided in each Part. Many physical laboratories are equipped with apparatus differing in some respects from the instruments here described, nevertheless the guidance given will enable intelligent use to be made of other forms of apparatus designed for the same or similar purposes. Attention is directed to the experimental treatment of dynamical principles, because its neglect, which is unfortunately common,

makes it difficult for a student to secure a thorough and systematic knowledge of physical science. The complete course of experimental work has been devised to meet both the requirements of the physicist and of the engineer; in cases where the methods of treatment adopted by these differ radically, the teacher or student may choose the experiment which best suits his special needs. In Part V., the treatment of the Dynamo, Telegraph, and so on, is that which follows naturally and logically from the earlier theoretical principles explained ; technical considerations of design and construction have been omitted as unsuitable in a text-book of Physics. A large number of worked-out examples have been included to assist the student to understand the text and to solve the exercises at the ends of the chapters. Many of these exercises have been taken, with the permission of the authorities to whom grateful acknowledgments are made, from examination papers, the source being given in each case. Questions marked L.U. are from examination papers of the London University and those with C.G. from papers of the City and Guilds of London Institute. Answers have been supplied in the case of numerical exercises, but it is too much to hope that these are entirely free from errors. The authors will welcome any corrections which readers may send to them. The authors are glad of this opportunity to express their indebtedness to Prof. Sir Richard Gregory and Mr. A. T. Simmons for constant assistance and invaluable hints while the book was in preparation and passing through the press.

INTRODUCTION

Delimitation of the Symbolic On entering the realms of symbolism, whether by way of systematized artistic forms or the living, dynamic forms of dreams and visions, we have constantly kept in mind the essential need to mark out the field of symbolic action, in order to prevent confusion between phenomena which might appear to be identical when they are merely similar or externally related. The temptation to over-substantiate an argument is one which is difficult to resist. It is necessary to be on one’s guard against this danger, even if full compliance with the ideals of scholarship is not always feasible; for we believe with Marius Schneider that there is no such thing as ‘ideas or beliefs’, only ‘ideas and beliefs’, that is to say that in the one there is always at least something of the other—quite apart from the fact that, as far as symbolism is concerned, other phenomena of a spiritual kind play an important part.

When a critic such as Caro Baroja (10) declares himself against any symbolic interpretation of myth, he doubtless has his reasons for so doing, although one reason may be that nothing approaching a complete evaluation of symbolism has yet appeared. He says: ‘When they seek to convince us that Mars is the symbol of War, and Hercules of Strength, we can roundly refute them. All this may once have been true for rhetoricians, for idealist philosophers or for a group of more or less pedantic graeculi. But, for those who really believed in ancient deities and heroes, Mars had an objective reality, even if this reality was quite different from that which we are groping for today. Symbolism occurs when natural religions are degenerating.’ In point of fact, the mere equation of Mars with War and of Hercules with Labour has never been characteristic of the symbolist ethos, which always eschews the categorical and restrictive. This comes about through allegory, a mechanical and restricting derivative of the symbol, whereas the symbol proper is a dynamic and polysymbolic reality, imbued with emotive and conceptual values: in other words, with true life.

Applications range from driving a car to launching a rocket, from a skater whirling on ice to a neutron star spinning in space, and from taking your temperature to taking a chest X-ray.

This text is intended for one-year introductory courses requiring algebra and some trigonometry, but no calculus. OpenStax College provides the essential supplemental resources at http://openstaxcollege.org ; however, we have pared down the number of supplements to keep costs low. College Physics can be easily customized for your course using Connexions (http://cnx.org/content/col11406). Simply select the content most relevant to your curriculum and create a textbook that speaks directly to the needs of your class.

General Approach

College Physics is organized such that topics are introduced conceptually with a steady progression to precise definitions and analytical applications. The analytical aspect (problem solving) is tied back to the conceptual before moving on to another topic. Each introductory chapter, for example, opens with an engaging photograph relevant to the subject of the chapter and interesting applications that are easy for most students to visualize.

Organization, Level, and Content

There is considerable latitude on the part of the instructor regarding the use, organization, level, and content of this book. By choosing the types of problems assigned, the instructor can determine the level of sophistication required of the student.

Concepts and Calculations

The ability to calculate does not guarantee conceptual understanding. In order to unify conceptual, analytical, and calculation skills within the learning process, we have integrated Strategies and Discussions throughout the text.

Modern Perspective

The chapters on modern physics are more complete than many other texts on the market, with an entire chapter devoted to medical applications of nuclear physics and another to particle physics. The final chapter of the text, “Frontiers of Physics,” is devoted to the most exciting endeavors in physics. It ends with a module titled “Some Questions We Know to Ask.”

Supplements

Accompanying the main text are a Student Solutions Manual and an Instructor Solutions Manual (http://openstaxcollege.org/textbooks/ college-physics) . The Student Solutions Manual provides worked-out solutions to select end-of-module Problems and Exercises. The Instructor Solutions Manual provides worked-out solutions to all Exercises.
